Forest Farmer
In the lush landscapes of West Bali, a group of dedicated forest farmers is leading the charge in sustainable land stewardship. As part of the government's Social Forestry program, these farmers have been entrusted with the land surrounding the West Bali National Park, embracing a mission that goes beyond farming—it's about preserving and enhancing the environment.
These farmers practice rustic farming, by cultivating crops within the rainforest without relying on modern machinery, they minimize environmental impact while maximizing ecological benefits. One of the remarkable aspects of rustic farming is its natural ability to sequester carbon through extensive root systems. These roots not only capture and store carbon but also play a crucial role in managing nitrogen levels in the soil. Research has shown that rustic farming systems, particularly those with diverse plant species, boast higher levels of organic carbon and total nitrogen, leading to richer soil and more abundant harvests—without the need for excessive fertilizers.
But the impact of these farmers extends far beyond crop yields. Their sustainable practices are vital for environmental conservation, helping to protect springs, prevent floods, and enhance water filtration and retention. The diverse plant life in these forests acts as a natural shield against pests and weeds, while also boosting soil fertility. By embracing rustic farming, the forest farmers of West Bali are not only securing their livelihoods but also playing a pivotal role in safeguarding the delicate ecosystems that define this unique region.

Nusantara
Nusantara is at the forefront of transforming how we support rural communities and protect forests by focusing on Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs). Understanding the struggles farmers face during harvest seasons when prices can drastically drop, Nusantara has made a steadfast commitment to purchasing NTFPs at fair prices. This dedication acts as a lifeline for farmers, empowering them to continue their sustainable practices and safeguard the forests that sustain their livelihoods.
Nusantara’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in its diverse range of products. From vanilla and cacao to coffee, essential oils, konjac, and beeswax, the company sources and processes NTFPs directly from local communities. This direct trade model not only provides a crucial source of income for farmers but also strengthens the connection between people and the forests they rely on.
The impact of Nusantara’s approach goes far beyond fair trade. By empowering local farmers and promoting sustainable land use, the company plays a pivotal role in conserving forests and the rich biodiversity they harbor. Nusantara’s efforts also contribute to the fight against climate change by preserving carbon-rich forests and reducing the pressure for unsustainable agricultural expansion. In essence, Nusantara is not just a company—it’s a catalyst for positive change, driving both environmental conservation and community prosperity.
